WhatsApp is anchored to a phone number — not an email, not a username. So what happens when you lose, break, or stop using the SIM card tied to your account? The good news: you can recover access, migrate to a new number, and preserve your chats and groups. The bad news: if you don’t act within 30 days, your account may be reassigned to the next person who gets your old number.
Critical 30-day window
US carriers recycle phone numbers after a 30–90 day disconnection period. WhatsApp doesn’t automatically delete your account, but if a new person gets your old number and registers WhatsApp, they take over the account — including chat history if 2-step verification isn’t enabled.
Step 1: Get your number back (if possible)
If you simply lost the physical SIM, call your carrier (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile) and request a SIM replacement. The number is reassigned to a new SIM card within minutes. Once your phone receives SMS again, open WhatsApp and re-verify with the SMS code.
Step 2: If your number is permanently gone
If you switched carriers and lost the number, use WhatsApp’s
Change Number feature
before deactivating the old number. From WhatsApp on the old number: Settings → Account → Change Number → enter old + new number → verify new number via SMS. Your chats, groups, and contacts migrate automatically.
Step 3: If the old number is already gone
This is the hard case. Options:
- Local backup restore: If you had Google Drive (Android) or iCloud (iOS) chat backup, install WhatsApp on a new device, register with your new number, and restore from backup.
- Account deletion: Email support@whatsapp.com with subject “Lost/Stolen: Please deactivate my account.” Include the country code and full phone number.
Step 4: 2-step verification saves you
If you previously set up 2-step verification with a PIN, even if someone else gets your old number, they cannot register WhatsApp without your PIN for 7 days. Use this window to either reclaim the number or request account deactivation.
Lost SIM + lost device
If both your SIM and phone are gone (stolen, lost, broken), call your carrier to suspend the number. Then email WhatsApp to deactivate the account. After replacing both, install WhatsApp on the new device, register with a replacement SIM having your old number, and restore from the latest cloud backup.
Preventing this in the future
- Always enable 2-step verification
- Add a recovery email
- Run weekly cloud backups
- Use an eSIM as backup so you always have a second line
